The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is an 11 bed ICU that cares for critically ill children at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. The PICU is staffed by RNs, NPs, and Pediatric Intensivist who work closely together with a supportive multidisciplinary care team to provide acute care to children from 0-18 years of age.  We offer a progressive educational program to train staff in pediatric critical care to include monthly inservices from our physicians. The PICU RN provides care for children and adolescents from 0-18 years of age, with life-threatening or high- acuity conditions that require constant monitoring. The RN identifies patient needs and priorities for care through detailed assessment of children who have respiratory, cardiac, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, orthopedic, endocrine and neurologic dysfunction.  The PICU RN plans and delivers safe, age appropriate care under critical situations based on the patient’s needs to include titration of drips, multiple technical procedures and use of a variety of equipment for acute care. The RN evaluates the patient’s response to care and the attainment of or progress toward expected outcomes. The RN is accountable for outcomes of patient care delivered during the assigned shift, and strives to provide clinical and service excellence.  

Under the direction of the physicians and clinical staff the Health Care Assistant(HCA) supports the assigned unit by providing technical patient care services and support related to patients on the nursing unit. Additionally assists staff, physicians, visitors and ancillary departments with routine patient care activities and clerical support as needed. Patient Care activities include vital signs, activities of daily living, transport, and transfer of patients to include discharge. Clerical support includes directing incoming calls and responding to patient calls, entering patient charges in the computer system, maintaining patient charts, unit files and secretarial supply levels and being responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly environment.

Job Summary   The advanced practice provider (APP) evaluates, manages and appropriately treats patients in the ED based on standards of practice in Emergency Medicine with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition, and provide services necessary to ameliorate minor illnesses or injuries in collaboration with the ED physician. The APP delivers comprehensive direct patient care by performing complete physical examination, ordering and performing diagnostic testing and screening, diagnosing illness, prescribing both pharmacological and other treatments for patients. The APP also evaluates patients with major illnesses or injuries to determine if additional care at the next level is necessary.   Also, the APP assumes accountability for indirect care responsibilities, which support patient care including staff and student education, clinical research, program development, and quality improvement.   The APP will see lower acuity patients independently and will be responsible for all aspects of care and disposition. Transports patients to and from the Imaging Department in a safe and efficient manner. Assists technologists in getting patients on and off of the examining table. The GYN Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) competencies include the fundamental knowledge, skills and expertise required to proficiently (a) participate in the care of patients with a past, current, or potential diagnosis of cancer, (b) assist patients with cancer, families and caregivers to overcome healthcare system barriers, and (c) provide education and resources to facilitate informed decision making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout all phases of the cancer continuum. The ONN is cognizant of the psychosocial and financial impact that disease and hospitalization has on the patient and family and acts as an advocate to identify and obtain needed resources and support. Oncology Nurse Navigators have expertise in nursing practice and ensure continuing expertise through clinical experience and continuing education. The complexity of the role requires a high level of autonony.
