Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children is proud to be the highest delivering hospital in the state of Alabama as well as the regional referral center for North Alabama and southern Tennessee. RNs on our 38 bed Mother/Baby unit provide family centered couplet care. Shortly after delivery, a dedicated team of nurses help mom and baby with skin-to-skin bonding and breastfeeding. The Mother Baby unit allows for rooming-in, lactation support, and designated quiet hours. The Mother/Baby RN is skilled in assessing, educating, and caring for postpartum mothers and newborns. The RN identifies patient needs, prioritizes care based on assessments, and is accountable for patient care delivered during the assigned shift. The Mother/Baby RN collaborates and effectively communicates with multidisciplinary team members. The Mother/Baby RN will receive ongoing education and training related to maternal/newborn care and breastfeeding.

AICU is an 8-bed Medical/Surgical Adult ICU at the Huntsville Hospital for Women/Children campus. Orientation consists of working with an experienced staff and length of orientation is typically 6-12 weeks depending on experience. AICU is the only adult critical care unit at the Women/Children campus. The AICU offers a challenging workflow for RN’s.  AICU receives a variety of patients that includes primarily critical Medical patients, but also Antepartum, Postpartum, GYN Oncology, GYN, ENT, and any adult patient at WC that requires intensive monitoring.  The RN’s in AICU are trained to care for a variety of critical situations including hemorrhage, critical OB, CRRT, ventilators, and titrating drips.  We have 4-beds wired for fetal monitoring that is monitored by an L&D RN on our campus for our critical Antepartum patient. AICU RN’s are responsible for all Rapid Responses and Code Blue situations for the adult patient population at WC.  The staff in AICU works closely with health care providers to provide excellent care and compassion to our customers. Our staff has the opportunity to participate in Shared Governance, Clinical Ladder programs, and CEU offerings available online & at Corporate University.

The Patient Care Aide(PCA) works under the direction of the RN/LPN. The responsibilities of the Patient Care Aide include providing direct patient care and maintaining patient care standards. The Patient Care Aide must exhibit the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; to organize, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.   -------------------------------------------- Non-Licensed Clinical Ladder: Huntsville Hospital non-licensed clinical ladder rewards dedicated patient care aides who meet defined criteria. The program looks at the years of employment, and professional and leadership development. The organization’s clinical ladder motivates our non-licensed personnel to continue developing skills beyond their original training. It also promotes excellent patient care, fosters self-growth and career advancement, and supports recognition. 

The Vital Statistics Technician: - Complete or assist with birth certificates and/or required data abstraction for entry into the State of Alabama database system EVERS. - Complete or assist with death certificates in State of Alabama EDR for Huntsville Hospital deaths according to Center for Vital Statistics guidelines. - Other medical record departmental duties as assigned

The Registered Nurse (RN) organizes and coordinates delivery of nursing care to groups of patients in compliance with hospital and departmental policies, protocols and procedures.  He/she provides direct patient care by monitoring physiological and behavioral status, evaluating patient progress and the effectiveness of interventions, and by performing treatments and procedures.  He/she recognizes, reports and documents clinical observations.  The Registered Nurse participates in orientation, training and management of personnel.  

Accountable for twenty-four hour, day to day operations of the patient care unit(s).  Including effective management of clinical systems, human resources, financial management and environmental management.  Promotes collaborative practice with other departments, physicians, and schools of nursing, and exhibits the ability to work with others to find solutions to difficult human, technical or administrative problems.  Must be able to adjust to and lead others through a rapidly changing environment.

Answers telephones, greeting all callers in a professional manner. Responsible for facilitating referral to area physicians, hospitals and community services. Listens to requests from patients or customers and accurately dispatches requests and information to the appropriate persons. Accurately communicates and dispatches Emergency Codes utilizing the Aionex Focus system. Promptly and accurately initiates offline procedures when indicated. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment, activity logs and checklists. Answers multiple incoming telephone lines to the hospital switchboard. Obtains necessary information and transfers calls to correct department or patient room extension. Provides information to callers as appropriate

The Advanced Practice Provider (CRNP) provides comprehensive direct patient care in collaboration with the attending physicians and multidisciplinary team. Role responsibilities include: obtaining comprehensive patient histories and physicals as they relate to the chief complaint(s) including medical screening exams; ordering and performing appropriate diagnostic testing and screening or the said chief complaint(s); interpreting lab and imaging results to accurately diagnose illness followed by determining nest steps for treatment and specialty consultation; and participating in procedural assistance as indicated by the diagnosis. Role responsibilities additionally include health maintenance and promotion, including patient and family education, return precautions, and follow up instructions. The APP will also collaborate with the attending physician for disposition planning to include discharge home, or when indicated, specialty consultation, including admissions. NP also takes part with indirect patient care responsibilities, including staff and student education, clinical research, program development, and quality improvement. The NP will be dedicated to ongoing learning and personal professional development to optimize contribution to our patients, colleagues, and the profession of advance practice provides as a whole.

The individual provides direct patient care for diverse patient populations that vary in gender, age, socioeconomic status, education, physical and mental abilities, locations, sexual lifestyle, and racial and ethnic background. The LPN implements technical nursing procedures according to established policies and procedures and plan of care, assists and reinforces routine patient education, and documents patient care appropriately.  The LPN communicates and interacts with other team members to facilitate teamwork and delivery of quality care.

The Clinical Charge Nurse identifies patient needs and priorities for care through assessment, planning and delegating care based on patient needs. Executes therapeutic physician orders and therapeutic nursing interventions. Evaluates the patient's response to care and the attainment of or progress towards patient outcomes. Coordinates care between other professional disciplines as needed. Helps patients and/or staff identify problems and explores with them the alternative choices and outcomes.

The Transfer Specialist accurately listens and responds appropriately to requests from transferring physicians, hospitals, inter-departments, and co-workers. Transfer specialist ensures all paperwork and computer entry is checked for accuracy and continually enhances his or her knowledge regarding processes. Transfer Specialist gives high priority to customer service. Required to work weekends and holidays as scheduled.
