The nurse practitioner/physician assistant provides comprehensive direct patient care and scholarly practice including obtaining comprehensive patient histories, performing complete physical examination, ordering and performing diagnostic testing and screening, diagnosing illness, prescribing both pharmacological and other treatments for patients, and providing health maintenance and promotion interventions such as patient and family education and counseling. Also, the NP/PA assumes accountability for indirect care responsibilities, which support patient care including staff and student education, clinical research if applicable, program development, and quality improvement. Assists in clerical functions as necessary.

Utilizes radiographic techniques to obtain diagnostic images.

Performs occupational therapy procedures and other related tasks under the direction of a Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) and assists the OTR/L in patient activities.  Supervises technicians, volunteers and students as assigned.

Obtains blood specimens from patients and delivers specimens to the laboratory and/or sends through the transport system.  Correctly identifies patients and specimens.

Acts as collaborative member of the clinical team in providing continuity of and quality patient care. Initiates patient care, gathers vital signs, prepares patient and exam room for procedures, and collects specimens. Provides patient education and support as needed to assist physician, patient and family. Assists coworkers and draws blood as needed.

In partnership with the RN, the Psychiatric Tech provides direct care to patients (adolescents to elderly).  Provides basic comfort measures, collects data to contribute to the plan of care and carries out interventions at the direction of the RN.

Provides medical nutrition care to patients through nutrition assessment, diagnosis, intervention and education utilizing evidence based guidelines.  Develops care plans with appropriate follow-up and reassessment of intervention. Manages the total nutritional care of patients receiving Enteral Nutrition. Assess and diagnose patients for malnutrition.

Maintains established standards of care, policies, objective, and goals in administering professional nursing care to all patients. The RN identifies patient needs and priorities for care through assessment. The RN plans and delegates care based on patient needs. The RN evaluates the patient’s response to care and the attainment of or progress toward expected outcomes. The RN is accountable for outcomes of patient care delivered during the assigned shift.

Masters the use of c-arm fluoroscopy and the surgical procedures it is used for. Functions in all traditional duties of an Imaging Technologist - Utilizes radiographic techniques under the direction of the Physician, to obtain diagnostic/operative images for the surgical procedure.

The Patient Care Aide(PCA) works under the direction of the RN/LPN. The responsibilities of the Patient Care Aide include providing direct patient care and maintaining patient care standards. The Patient Care Aide must exhibit the ability to work with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; to organize, set priorities and manage multiple priorities, and to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.   -------------------------------------------- Non-Licensed Clinical Ladder: Huntsville Hospital non-licensed clinical ladder rewards dedicated patient care aides who meet defined criteria. Under the direction of the physicians and clinical staff the Health Care Assistant(HCA) supports the assigned unit by providing technical patient care services and support related to patients on the nursing unit. Additionally assists staff, physicians, visitors and ancillary departments with routine patient care activities and clerical support as needed. Patient Care activities include vital signs, activities of daily living, transport, and transfer of patients to include discharge. Clerical support includes directing incoming calls and responding to patient calls, entering patient charges in the computer system, maintaining patient charts, unit files and secretarial supply levels and being responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly environment.

  The 3W&C Surgical Unit at the Huntsville Hospital for Women/Children campus offers a challenging workflow for the staff. This adult surgical floor receives a variety of patients that includes GYN, GYN Oncology, Breast Cancer, Postpartum, low risk Antepartum, ENT, Plastics, Pain, Ortho, and Ocular diagnoses.  LPN orientation consists of working with an experienced RN and length of orientation is typically 6-12 weeks depending on experience. New PCA & HCA’s are orientated by experienced unit PCA’s & HCA’s and length of orientation is dependent on each new employee. The clinical staff is trained to care for the post-op adult as well as adult medical patients.  The staff on 3WSE works closely with health care providers to provide excellent care and compassion to their customers. Our staff has the opportunity to participate in Shared Governance, Clinical Ladder programs, and CEU offerings available online & at Corporate University.The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) performs a broad array of nursing tasks under the supervision of a registered nurse or provider. The individual provides direct patient care for diverse patient populations that vary in gender, age, socioeconomic status, education, physical and mental abilities, locations, sexual lifestyle, and racial and ethnic background. The LPN implements technical nursing procedures according to established policies and procedures and plan of care, assists and reinforces routine patient education, and documents patient care appropriately.  The LPN communicates and interacts with other team members to facilitate teamwork and delivery of quality care.

The Child Life Specialist identifies the psychosocial needs of the pediatric patient and provides activities that are developmentally appropriate to satisfy those needs.  Executes therapeutic and recreational activities and evaluates the patient’s response/progress toward normal age and appropriate behavior.  Schedules volunteers to ensure smooth operation of the Child Life Program during the daytime hours.  Act as liaison for activities from the community.

Coordinates patient’s transition from hospital to home through collaboration with physicians, nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to enhance continuity of patient care, promote cost effective utilization of resources and enhance patient, nurse and physician satisfaction. Provides psychosocial assessment, resources and intervention to hospitalized patients.

Performs business development and marketing functions for assigned clinic practice(s).  Promotes collaborative practice with hospital departments, physicians, and clinics.  Exhibits ability to work with others to identify and implement solutions to difficult human, technical, and administrative problems.  Develops, implements, and evaluates department policy with other directors, physicians and administrative staff.  Must be able to adjust to and lead others through rapidly changing environment.
