Performs venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks to obtain blood samples for testing purposes. Properly identifies patients and follows procedures for collection of specimens. Properly registers patients recording demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data into registration/order entry system ensuring accuracy necessary for proper registration, billing, and test requisition. Uses multiple electronic systems to conduct registration and order entry functions. Processes and prepares specimens maintaining proper specimen identification and sample integrity, for testing in various laboratory sections. Works cooperatively with others, supports, and addresses any customer service needs. Processes and receives specimens into the laboratory, following laboratory protocol for specimen acceptability and rejection. Enters outpatient orders into Laboratory Information System. May collect chain of custody drug screens for pre-employment, post-accident, and just cause cases according to protocol. Places orders and collects blood for needle-stick exposures. May assist with frozen sections and clerical duties as needed. Assesses/orders phlebotomy supplies and fills ED and OR orders. Receives and processes incoming laboratory specimens for in and outpatients. Maintains and files reference lab reports. Responsible for duties such as faxing, phone, and pneumatic tube services. Receives frozen sections and/or fresh specimens from the OR, and assists the Pathologist. Responsible for obtaining accession numbers, slide and cassette labeling, staining slides, and charging for frozen sections. May perform maintenance on cryostats. Demonstrates safe handling and pouring of formalin. Handles, packages, and ships special cases to reference laboratories. Washes and dries all pipettes. Routinely inventories body fluid samples and discards when appropriate. Obtains logs for pathology and processing. Process all laboratory specimens received in the tube system, centrifuges samples, and delivers samples to appropriate departments for testing. Separates and creates manifests for reference laboratory testing. Performs other related functions as assigned.
Education:
-A high school diploma or GED; Completion of a formal training course in phlebotomy procedures from an accredited school or training program preferred.
Experience:
Two year documented phlebotomy and/or registration experience in a hospital or commercial laboratory environment. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required along with moderate knowledge of medical terminology.
Licenses/Certificates: Current BLS certification upon hire or completed within 30 days of hire
