Overview

Job Summary:

The Emergency Department Medical Scribe works directly alongside Emergency Medicine physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to provide accurate, real-time clinical documentation and support efficient Emergency Department workflow.

The Medical Scribe assists providers with documentation, transcription, and clerical functions while maintaining accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance with hospital policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Work alongside Emergency Medicine physicians and APPs during patient encounters.
  • Document patient histories, examinations, medical decision-making, procedures, consultations, and dispositions in real time.
  • Track diagnostic testing and help providers maintain accurate and timely documentation.
  • Review relevant medical record information and assist with documentation throughout the patient’s ED visit.
  • Support efficient provider workflow in a fast-paced Emergency Department.
  • Maintain accuracy, professionalism, and patient confidentiality at all times.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of or demonstrated aptitude for medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills.
  • Quick and accurate typing and computer skills.
  • Ability to learn clinical documentation requirements and accurately document patient encounters in real time.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume Emergency Department environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and accompany a provider for extended periods.
  • Excellent follow-through and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while functioning effectively as part of the healthcare team.
  • Dependable, mature, and professional.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Some college coursework in a healthcare, science, or related field preferred.
  • Completion of a formal medical scribe training program is preferred but not required.
  • Medical scribe certification is not required.

Experience

Qualified candidates should have one or more of the following:

  • Previous medical scribe experience in an Emergency Department, hospital, physician practice, or other clinical setting; OR
  • Previous healthcare experience involving clinical documentation, medical terminology, or exposure to patient care, such as EMT, medical assistant, patient care technician, nursing assistant, or similar healthcare experience; OR
  • Relevant college coursework or training in pre-medical studies, nursing, physician assistant studies, allied health, biology, anatomy and physiology, or another healthcare-related field, with demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to learn clinical documentation.

Previous Emergency Department medical scribe experience is strongly preferred but is not required for an otherwise qualified candidate.
