Overview

A pharmacy resident is a licensed pharmacist enrolled in a one-year training program in pharmacy practice.  Residents perform all duties of a clinical pharmacist and clinical pharmacy specialist and are involved in a number of departmental and hospital –wide projects.  Residents are also involved in precepting students from various schools of pharmacy.

Qualifications

Education: 

Requires a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from an accredited school of pharmacy. A license to practice pharmacy in Alabama is required by September 1 of the year in which the residency was begun.

Experience:

Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 residency program

  • Residents should be licensed as a pharmacist in Alabama as soon as possible upon acceptance to the PGY-2 residency programs. If not licensed upon starting the residency program, the resident must obtain an Alabama pharmacist license by September 1 of the year in which the residency was begun. Failure to obtain such licensure by September 1 will result in dismissal from the program, unless circumstances beyond the control of the resident exist. In such cases, the RPD and RAC will review the situation and make a determination as to how to proceed. If an extension is granted, the resident must obtain said licensure as soon as possible. If deemed necessary, the resident’s length of training may be extended – with or without pay as dictated by hospital budget – to allow for at least 10 months of overlapping licensure and residency training.

Additional Skills/Abilities

Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly.  Must be proficient in mathematics.  Must be able to manage time wisely to complete necessary projects.
