Job Summary: 

 Demonstrates through behavior Decatur Morgan Hospital’s mission, vision and values. he Vascular Access Registered Nurse is a specialized RN responsible for the assessment, insertion, management, and maintenance of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), midline catheters, and other vascular access devices. This role supports safe, timely, and evidence-based vascular access while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

Clinical Practice

  • Perform ultrasound-guided insertion of PICC lines and midline catheters in accordance with policy, scope of practice, and evidence-based standards
  • Assess patients for appropriate vascular access device selection
  • Verify catheter tip placement using approved technology or radiographic confirmation per policy
  • Provide troubleshooting for vascular access complications (occlusion, infiltration, phlebitis, infection, dislodgement)
  • Perform dressing changes, line maintenance, and catheter removals
  • Ensure compliance with CLABSI prevention bundles and infection control practices

Consultation & Collaboration

  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing, physicians, and advanced practice providers
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds as indicated
  • Provide recommendations regarding vascular access planning and escalation

Education

  • Educate patients and families on vascular access device care and precautions
  • Provide staff education related to device selection, maintenance, and complication prevention

Documentation & Quality

  • Accurately document procedures, assessments, and patient education in the electronic medical record
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to vascular access outcomes
  • Assist with data collection for CLABSI and other performance metrics

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

·         Acts quickly in an emergency, rendering appropriate life-saving measures

·         Communicates with people

·         Able to care for patients of all ages

·         Demonstrates leadership skill / ability

·         Current in BLS

 Reasoning Development:

Manual dexterity: Use of body members or special devices to work, and perform functions pertinent to accomplishment of job assignment.

 

Education:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  Possesses a nursing license in good standing in the State of Alabama. BSN preferred

 

Experience: Minimum of five years hospital clinical experience and a minimum of two years of vascular access experience preferred
