Overview

Performs a variety of duties from clerical functions of a nursing unit according to the nursing service policies and procedures and facilitates communication between the nursing staff and other hospital departments, physicians, and visitors. Performs a variety of duties to assist in surgery and setting up delivery tables in Labor and Delivery. Responsible for managing/monitoring sterile fields and assist the surgeon during the surgical procedure in the OB OR. Provides sterile instrumentation and supplies according to AORN guidelines. Performs ordering and maintenance of supplies on the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains presence at work station to greet customers, responds appropriately to inquires, gives directions, channels communication; answers phone and courteously routes calls; and utilizes computer system to assure timely communications.
  • Transcribes physician orders with Nursing over site; accurately and timely data entry per computer/medical forms.
  • Prepares chart material; assist Physician; accurately and timely maintains chart; discharge procedures.
  • Timely ordering of supplies as directed; retrieval of order, maintain accountability for reconciliation of received supplies; assist with organization and placement of supplies; assist with end of shift reconciliation of inventory.
  • Prepares OR and LD room table with the appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment to accomplish the surgical procedure or vaginal delivery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sterile technique during preparation for execution and completion of the operative procedure and vaginal delivery.
  • Competently and willingly assist the operative team before, during, and after the surgical procedure. In the OR, sets up the instrument pack table and mayo stand, drapes patient, and passes instruments to the surgeon for timely execution of the surgical procedure. In the LD room, sets up instruments pack table and assist in getting the physician or the RN extra supplies that might be needed

Qualifications

Education:

High school graduate or equivalent preferred. 

 

Experience: 

Preferred – previous experience as a unit secretary acceptable – other related experience supportive of the ability to be trained to perform duties. Computer knowledge and skills or the ability to be trained. On the job training and/or previous experience as an Operating Room Technician.

 

Additional Skills/Abilities:

CPR certification or capability to certify within 3 months. Capable of communicating verbally with the staff, patients, and visitors. Administrative skills: effective telephone skills, intercom skills, maintaining patient records. Office skills: fax, computer, printer, and photocopier. Capable of working overtime as required. Able to read, write, and speak the English language. In the OR, capable of handling critical and emergent situations, pressure due to multiple demands. Flexible to take call for unplanned cesarean sections. Demonstrates basic knowledge if anatomy and physiology of tissue handling.
