Overview

The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the
principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of
all the work requirements, which may be inherent in the position.
The department educator is responsible for educational activities and the learning needs of the staff
including monitoring orientation. The educator will collaborate and work closely with the nurse manager
and other educators within the hospital system. This may include working/teaching at any MMC location
at times as well as working with night shift and weekend team staff to address educational needs in the
department. The educator may be required to work in the department in emergent situations.
Some of the skills performed

• Managing orientation for new and transfer employees (including employees changing job
positions within the department): orientation schedules, 30 day check ins, ensuring
orientation guides are complete, facilitating transition from orientation to out of orientation
status, new hire checklist, ensuring all initial competencies are completed in NetLearning.

• Annual skills day organization
• BLS, ACLS, PALS classes
• Monitoring certifications for staff including BLS, ACLS, and PALS
• Monitor and ensure annual education is complete for all staff
• Competency development and check off
• Beyond basic competency follow up/education
• Cerner super user, chart audits for one year post Cerner go live to assess educational
needs for staff and to ensure documentation is compliant
• Participation in all RCA’s and provide follow up education to all staff
• Joint Commission tracers and preparation
• Super user and educate staff on new equipment and products

Qualifications

Education
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing program
• LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:
• Licensure by the Alabama State Board of Nursing
• BLS, ACLS, and PALS instructor certified or willing to obtain within 1 year
• EXPERIENCE:
• 3 year minimum experience in department preferred but not required
• SKILLS:
• Excellent communication, organization, teamwork, computer, and interpersonal skills
