Overview

Job Summary:

Provides leadership / oversight role for clinical expertise, staffing, quality assurance and financial management for the Surgical Services, Pre-Assessment, OPS, PACU, and Sterile Processing departments. Responsible for all aspects of patient care activities, staff performance and physician relations. Implements strategies and standards that support Decatur Morgan Hospital’s mission, i.e., exceptional quality of care, patient safety and patient satisfaction. Directs departments in compliance with AORN, AAMI, TJC, and CDC recommended standards.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

  1. Demonstrates thorough understanding of hospital, regulatory and departmental policies and procedures, ensuring staff compliance. Works to develop departmental policies and procedures.
  2. Effectively allocates and evaluates department work schedules. Determines required staffing levels to assure patient care is delivered in a timely, efficient manner.
  3. Monitors and analyzes financial performance, identifying trends in utilization of space, supplies, and staffing and/or other resources to ensure the financial success of the department. Analyzes the use of funds, develops annual budget, and implements solutions that could potentially reduce overall operating expenses in conjunction with providing quality patient care.
  4. Accepts responsibility for decision making and maintains effective, open communication with physicians, staff members and administration. Demonstrates sound judgment, accountability and discretion to meet short-term and long-term goals of the department.
  5. Establish goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the department in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the hospital. Works with administration to achieve these goals and objectives.
  6. Works directly with staff members, establishing definite expectations in areas of leadership, accountability and professionalism. Monitors staff performance and seeks to resolve issues in a timely manner. Serves as a role model for excellent service. Ensures all staff is appropriately trained and reinforces behaviors and standards the lead to positive interactions with patients and team members.
  7. Develops and maintains quality improvement activities and recommends/ implements changes as appropriate.
  8. Works directly with surgeons/physicians to accommodate individual requests, obtain equipment or supplies, limit room turnover time and adjust scheduled block time, promoting physician satisfaction and optimal patient outcome.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

 

Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing and currently licensed to practice as a R.N. in the state of Alabama. CNOR and Master’s Degree preferred.

 

Experience: 10 years OR experience with prior experience in a management position required.

 

Additional Skills/Abilities: Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly. Ability to assign tasks and assist with setting priorities of others. Excellent communication skills necessary.
