Overview

Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive direct patient care and scholarly practice by evaluating and managing patients in the inpatient setting based on standards of practice in Gastroenterology (GI) in collaboration with the GI physician. This care includes obtaining comprehensive patient histories, performing complete physical examination, ordering and performing diagnostic testing and/or screening, diagnosing illness, prescribing both pharmacological and/or other treatments for patients, and providing health maintenance and promotion interventions such as patient and family education and counseling.  Also, the NP assumes accountability for indirect care responsibilities, which support patient care including staff and student education, clinical research, program development, and quality improvement.

Responsibilities

 Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions 

1.     Perform functions and procedures within the NP’s specific Scope of Practice and Core Medical Staff Privileges.

2.     Evaluate and manage assigned patients in an effective and efficient manner.

3.     Collect patient data through integration from a wide variety of sources and prioritizes actual and/or potential health care problems.

4.     Analyze the assessment data to formulate clinical judgments and decisions regarding appropriate recommendations and treatments for a plan of care to guide the multidisciplinary team toward restoration of health for patients.

5.     Facilitate organizational resources that promote optimal patient outcomes through planning, implementing, and delegating therapeutic interventions identified in the multidisciplinary plan of care.

6.     Establish and monitor standards of practice to improve patient care in collaboration with other clinical experts.

7.     Evaluate the patient’s response to therapeutic interventions and modify the plan of care to optimize clinical outcomes.

8.     Collaborate with Hospitalist physician for high acuity and/or complex patients.

9.     Responsible for complete and comprehensive documentation for all elements required for patient care and billing purposes.

10.  Sign notes and orders timely as defined by the departmental guidelines and/or Medical Staff Rules and Regulations.

11.  Attend scheduled staff meetings and assigned committee meetings.

12.  Attend required training updates including documentation, EMR, billing, and/or standards of clinical practice.

13.  Actively participate in monthly/quarterly APP chart review as required by the Alabama Board of Nursing Quality Assurance Plan.

14.  Complete annual HR and/or departmental requirements within specified time frame.

15.  Participate in departmental and/or hospital process improvement initiatives including annual hospital goals.

16.  Act in a manner that is cordial to peers and always in the best interest of patient care and the department.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required

 Education:  Completion of Nurse Practitioner Masters of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university.  Successful completion of a National Certification Exam for NP, current registration through the Alabama board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and approval of the Decatur Morgan Hospital credentialing board.

Certification: Family Practice or Acute Care.

 Experience: Minimum 3 years full-time Inpatient RN or Critical Care RN and/or Inpatient NP experience preferred.

 Additional Skill/Abilities:  Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly.  BLS for Healthcare Providers must be obtained in orientation period and maintained current. ACLS must be obtained within the first 6 months of employment and maintained current. Medical Staff requirements must be met and maintained.
