An LPN performs a variety of direct and indirect patient care under the direction of a registered nurse

Some of the skills performed

  • May work with RN and share responsibility for team of patients
  • Administration of IV fluids
  • Administration of medications (certain IV medications after successful completion of certification class)
  • Venipuncture for blood collection
  • Insertion of IV cannula’s
  • Physical Assessment and collecting of information
  • Rounding with physicians
  • Fingerstick blood sugars
  • Directing staff in patient care
  • Insertion of foley catheters
    • Dressing wounds and skin care

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse Program and current licensure by the Alabama State Board of Nursing.

 

After orientation demonstrates and maintains skills and knowledge pertinent to the practice and education of a Licensed Practical Nurse

 

After orientation demonstrates competence of the care of the Acute Care patient
