Overview

The Oncology RN is responsible for providing professional nursing care to adult and geriatric patients with hematologic and oncologic diseases.  He/She is responsible for assisting the medical and radiation oncologists with patients in clinic, with primary responsibility to the medical oncologist(s).  This position functions under the authority of the Clinical Oncology Manager in accordance with the nursing guidelines provided by the Director of Nursing for Marshall Medical Center South and the policies and procedures for Marshall Medical Centers. 

 

This RN is responsible for all nursing care activities; initial assessment of patients, execute nursing care plans, providing direct nursing care, patient education, assisting physician with procedures and interacting with Social Services as needed to provide patient resources.

Patient Care

>Uses clinical, listening skills along with good professional judgment to assess patients appropriately.

>Accurately takes and records patient’s vital signs and other appropriate patient observations. 

>Collaborates with other members of the health care team

>Educates and Instructs patient and family.  Documents education based on assessment.

>Conscientiously and continuously applies nursing principles in patient care

>Ensures patient is comfortable during exam.

 

Clinical Duties

>Assists physician with exams and/ or procedures

>Prepare patient charts

>Schedules testing, follows up on outstanding results.

>Ensures all tests results have been completed prior to patient visit.

>Processes pathology samples for pickup.

>Performs patient care, and operational duties as assigned

 

Care of Environment and equipment

>Maintains work area and patient exam rooms

>Maintains equipment

>Reports equipment/ building maintenance concerns to the appropriate personnel through on line work orders.

 

Information processing and documentation

>Proper documentation in charts/ EMR.

>Provide records as requested in a timely manner, whether to another physician’s office, hospital or someone within our hospital system.

>Charges for equipment and supplies through proper documentation/ coding

>Uses computer system efficiently

 

Interpersonal/ Customer Service Skills

>Responds in a polite and timely manner to phone calls and messages.

>Communicates effectively with patients/ families, physicians and other staff.

>Maintains flexibility and adaptability

>Assists co-workers as needed

>Resolves problems

>Consistently meets the hospital’s Journey to Service Excellence standards

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

                        Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with associates or bachelor’s RN degree

                 

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

                        Current Alabama RN license

                        Certified CPR certification.

               

DESIRED:

                         Chemo Certified or willingness to become certified
