Overview

The RN Program Coordinator, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) is responsible for the coordination of efficient, safe, and timely patient care to patients served at DMH. The Coordinator actively participates in the development and implementation of goals, strategies, and tactics to support the continued growth and success of the DMH Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program. The Coordinator assists in the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accreditation process and ensures continuous compliance with MBSAQIP requirements. The Coordinator serves as the designated MBS Program Coordinator for purposes of MBSAQIP accreditation. The Coordinator is a registered nurse who works in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of physicians, advance practice providers, health psychologists, registered nurses, nutritionists, medical assistants, and appointment schedulers to plan, direct, and evaluate the care provided to MBS patients. He/she must possess expertise in nursing practice, clinical care standards, and workflows in addition to MBSAQIP accreditation requirements. The Coordinator relies on evidence-based practice standards to assure consistent high quality care and a positive patient and family experience across the continuum of care. This involves coordination of meetings, data collection, and patient and staff education and care coordination with inpatient and outpatient teams at DMH. The Coordinator maintains a database for quality metrics and identifies and implements process improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

A. Clinical Program and Accreditation Coordination

• Serves as primary point of contact to prospective MBS patients and manages and promptly responds to requests for program information.

• Develops, maintains, and evaluates patient care standards for the clinic.

• Maintains relevant policies and procedures and coordinates patient education, outcomes data collection, quality improvement efforts, and education of relevant staff in the various aspects of the MBS patient with a focus on patient safety.

• Supports the development of written protocols and education detailing the rapid communication and basic response to critical vital signs that is specifically required to minimize delays in the diagnosis and treatment of serious adverse events.

• Provides ongoing guidance in adherence to the MBSAQIP accreditation process, working with national organization, Data Analysts, and database to assure quality of care measures are maintained.

• Collaborates with MBSAQIP Program Director, clinic management, and multidisciplinary care team to support best practice and prompt attention to support needed.

• Acts as a consultant and clinical resource to clinic staff through provision of patient care and coordination of care.

B. Program Growth and Strategic Planning

• Collaborates with administration, providers, and staff in business planning efforts to develop and grow the MBS program.

• Serves as the primary operational owner for MBS business plan implementation.

• Coordinates patient and referring provider outreach activities in support of clinical program growth.

• Regularly reviews clinical, operational, and financial data to monitor program success and identify opportunities for improvement.

• Communicates with and engages program stakeholders within and outside of DMH.

• Develops and implements action plans to enhance patient satisfaction and access as well as provider productivity.

C. Education/Outreach

• Must remain a content expert and aware of best practices.

• Participates in patient, family, and staff programatic teaching.

• Coordinates appropriate written patient education materials.

• Supports and/or participates in research programs, community education, and outreach programs

Qualifications

Education:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.  Possesses a nursing license in good standing in the State of Alabama. BSN required. MSN or MBA preferred.

 

Experience: A minimum of 5 years clinical experience. Experience in Case Management, Care Coordination/Navigation and/or Program Coordination is a plus.
