Overview

The RN identifies patient needs and priorities for care through assessment. The RN plans and delegates care based on patient needs.  The RN executes therapeutic physician orders and therapeutic nursing interventions.  The RN evaluates the patient's response to care and the attainment of or progress toward expected outcomes.  The RN is accountable for outcomes of patient care delivered during the assigned shift.   

Responsibilities

  • Reassesses patients based on presenting problems or needs in the Perioperative setting.
  • Formulates and updates a plan of care based on patient/family needs for surgical procedures.  Serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team planning care for the Perioperative patient.
  • Post Anesthesia Care Unit will use department policies and follow the National guidelines of Nursing Practice as set forth by the American Society of Post Anesthesia Nurses as a guide in implementing the plan of care to those patients entrusted to our staff.
  • PACU nurses will assure that all needed supplies and equipment are available and functioning properly.
  • Safely administers and controls medications and narcotics; initiates and maintains I.V. therapy.
  • The PACU nurse will follow the written policies set forth by the department of Anesthesia to evaluate patient outcomes and measure the effectiveness of nursing care.
  • PACU nurses will accurately complete documentation of the PACU record. For in-patients, this record will be placed on the chart immediately postop.
  • Assists in orientation of new employees, serves as relief charge, etc; flexible to schedule; performs all other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Performs work according to rules, regulations, policies and guidelines; complies with standards in the Code of Conduct.

Qualifications

Education:

Current Alabama RN license or a current RN multi-state license

 

Experience: 

2 years critical care or PACU experience required.

 

Additional Skills/Abilities: 

BLS, ACLS and PALS, certification or eligibility/capability to certify within 90 days. Able to work under the following conditions:  contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances; exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, and illness); subject to varying and unpredictable situations; handles emergency or crisis situations; may perform emergency care; occasionally subjected to irregular hours; occasional stress due to multiple calls and inquiries. Capable of working overtime as required. Able to read, write and speak English.
