We are an inpatient Medical Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant step-down floor at Huntsville Hospital consisting of 36 beds divided into two units. We have a progressive education program for learning to administer chemotherapy and to care for our stem cell transplant patients. We support our RNs to expand their Oncology knowledge base and become Oncology Certified (OCN). Oncology's mission is to provide highly skilled care delivered with compassion and respect that positively impacts our patients and their loved ones.
The Oncology RN identifies patient needs and priorities for care though astute assessment of patients with a variety of issues such as pancytopenia, limited organ function, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, infusion reactions, and other side effects of cancer therapy. The Oncology RN plans and delegates care based on patient needs, including IV therapy, blood administration, central line care, and patient and family education. The Oncology RN evaluates the patient's response to care and the attainment of or progress toward expected outcomes, especially regarding symptom management, mobility, and safety needs. The RN is accountable for outcomes of patient care delivered during the assigned shift, and strives to provide clinical and service excellence.
