  • Responsibilities

    Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

    1. Coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of the clinical education program for the Emergency Department.
    2. Collaborates with departmental leadership to identify educational and practice gaps; designs educational initiatives to improve care.
    3. Supports and guides clinical staff in learning, applying and implementing care guidelines, processes and standards. 
    4. Serves as a mentor and resource to staff related to education, clinical practice and professional development.
    5. Monitors patient care for quality and safety, maintains knowledge of Joint Commission standards and assist leadership to ensure compliance with standards. 
    6. Facilitates staff orientation, preceptorships, and competency assessment upon hire.
    7. Facilitates staff competency assessment ongoing and at a minimum, annually, to include but is not limited to BLS renewal, annual clinical competencies, ACLS and PALS.
    8. Collaborates and assists ED Leadership in special projects, performance improvement projects, quality and safety initiatives, and other duties as assigned.
    9. Maintains awareness of assigned departmental needs, new developments and evidenced based practice changes in emergency medicine.

    Maintains positive working relationship with Emergency Department Providers; including physicians and advanced practice providers.  Coordinates with Medical Director for potential educational needs of staff


    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:


    Education/Licensure/Certifications:  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, preferably bachelor degree.  Current Alabama nursing license.  BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC required, 1 year allowed to obtain TNCC certification.  Prefer instructor certifications in BLS and ACLS.


    Experience: Minimum of five years nursing experience in Emergency Department is required.  Prefer previous management and/or educator experience.  Experience in critical care areas of nursing preferred.  


    Additional Skills/Abilities:

    Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, requiring prioritization and changing task frequently/quickly.  Must have knowledge of all equipment and materials required for procedures performed in the ED.  Proficient in use of computer, to include word processing and spreadsheet applications.
